其行动被外界视为仿效2022年在北京四通桥抗议的彭立发，引起警方注意，随后被警方带走关押在成都拘留所。
有法律界人士此前分析指出，当局可能以“寻衅滋事”等非政治性罪名处理相关案件，以降低政治敏感度。

According to sources familiar with the matter, Mei Shilin, who was detained earlier this year for hanging banners calling for political reform, was released on December 15, 2025. He has since returned to his home in Chengdu. The specific conditions of his release, as well as whether he remains under any form of restriction or surveillance, are currently unknown.
Mei Shilin, male, 27, is from Yongfu Town, Muchuan County, Sichuan Province. Prior to his detention, he worked at a technology company in Chengdu. In the early hours of April 15, three banners were hung from an overpass near the Chadianzi Bus Terminal in Chengdu, bearing the slogans:
“There can be no national rejuvenation without political reform,”
“The people do not need a party whose power is unchecked,” and
“China does not need anyone to dictate the direction—democracy is the direction.”
Mei’s action was widely seen as echoing the Sitong Bridge protest carried out in Beijing in 2022 by Peng Lifa. The banners quickly drew police attention, and Mei was subsequently taken into custody and held at a detention facility in Chengdu.
Legal analysts previously noted that authorities might handle the case under non-political charges such as “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” a common approach used to reduce the political sensitivity of similar cases.
