1989年的春夏之交，軍隊開進北京城，以真槍實彈鎮壓和平的學生與市民示威運動。但在官方主導下，1989年6月4日的血腥屠殺，以及整個八九民主運動，卻從中國的當代歷史中迅速消失，並被扭曲和反轉。

香港以燭光集會、紀念策展、通識教育、不曾間斷的社會運動刻下這段歷史。31年過去，香港的自由搖搖欲墜，一國兩制名存實亡。有生之年，我們會不會見證「六四」歷史消失第二次？

在香港，想像一個沒有燭光的維多利亞公園？一個沒有六四的歷史通識課本？一個不斷被逼遷、最終消失的「六四紀念館」？就像在中國，被洗淨斑斑血跡的天安門。

一段歷史消失，就是歷史重演的開始。

八九民運的見證者正在逝去，親歷者大多流亡。真相尚未揭示，歷史絕不能消失第二次。

我們打算做什麼？

我們打算在網絡上建造一座「六四記憶人權博物館」。

「六四紀念館」自從2012年在香港建立，面臨重重打壓與騷擾，在自由環境不斷惡化的香港，紀念館對珍貴歷史檔案與文物的保存實難為繼。我們發起眾籌計劃，為八九民運、「六四」屠殺死難者建立一座，永久保存的人權博物館。

在你的幫助下，我們要做這三件事：

第一，檔案集中、數字保存。收集過去三十多年來散落在香港、北京、台灣、美加歐澳等世界各地大學圖書館、檔案館、個人收藏者、親歷者手中的有關1989年中國民主運動的檔案資料，包括歷史文件、民間資料、日記、錄音、影像等，集中備份，數字化處理，英文翻譯，建立查詢檔案並永久保存，防止任何人篡改歷史、消滅記憶。

第二，重建論述、數字策展。成立學術委員會及策展顧問團，邀請學者、藝術家等設計線上互動展覽，將「六四」還原為「八九民運」，將「一九八九」放回八十年代的歷史語境，重建論述，讓「六四」被「抗爭」而不僅是「鎮壓」定義，令八九民運的歷史，可以與世界歷史，與當下正在發生的社會運動互動溝通。

第三，開源代碼、博物館可複用計劃。我們為八九民運建立起的網絡博物館的前端設計、基本功能、信息結構、技術框架，都會在穩定使用之後，將代碼開源，希望它可以更便利地被應用於其他線上博物館項目，例如其他社會運動紀念館，或數字化人權資料庫。

籌集150萬港元，在未來一年的時間裡，以專業的研究、檔案、技術及策展團隊，完成檔案的收集、數字化、永久保存，並在梳理的基礎上重建論述，最終建成「六四記憶人權博物館」。同時，發起關鍵議題的持續研究和動態展覽，讓歷史經驗得以與當下正在發生的社會運動對話。

Background Story

In the spring and summer of 1989, the army entered Beijing and used live ammunition to suppress peaceful demonstrations by students and citizens. But through the actions of the government, the facts about the bloody massacre on June 4, 1989, and about the entire democratic movement in 1989, rapidly vanished, were distorted or inverted in contemporary Chinese history.

In Hong Kong this history has been preserved through candlelight, textbooks, memorials, and uninterrupted social movements. Over the past 31 years, however, freedom in Hong Kong has steadily crumbled, and the “one country, two systems” arrangement has come to exist only in name. Will we witness in our lifetime a second disappearance of Tiananmen Massacre history?

Can we imagine a Victoria Park absent the candlelight of annual June 4 memorial vigils? Can we imagine history textbooks that make no mention at all of the Tiananmen Massacre? Can we imagine the June 4th Museum finally vanishing after being forced to move again and again?

Witnesses to the 1989 democracy movement are now passing away, and others who experienced it have gone into exile. The blood stains of Tiananmen Square were cleaned, but there has still not been a reckoning with the truth. We cannot allow history yet again to disappear.

The vanishing of history is the beginning of its repetition.

What Are We Going to Do?

Our plan is to build a Tiananmen Massacre Memorial Museum on the Internet.

Since its establishment in Hong Kong in 2012, the June 4th Museum has again and again suffered pressure and harassment. In Hong Kong, where freedom is deteriorating, the preservation of precious historical archives and relics faces many difficulties. The goal of this crowdfunding campaign is to build a permanent museum of human rights memory for the 1989 democratic movement.

With your help, we will accomplish these three things:

1. Collect historical files and store them in digital form. We will collect archives and materials about the 1989 democratic movement that have over the past three decades been scattered in university libraries, government archives and personal collections around the world. These include historical documents and private materials, diaries, audio recordings, video footage and so on. We will preserve these files by producing digital copies, translating these into English, establishing an archive query system and finally building encrypted storage that will prevent anyone from tampering with history and eliminating memory.

2. Rebuild the narrative with digital curation. We will organize an academic committee and curation advisory group to invite scholars, artists, and others to design online interactive exhibitions, restoring the “June 4th Massacre” to its context within the 1989 democracy movement, and returning “1989” to the fuller context of events in the 1980s — in this way rebuilding the narrative and allowing June 4th to be defined and understood as being about resistance rather than just suppression. This process will allow the history of the 1989 democratic movement to better communicate with the broader history of the world and with social movements currently taking place.

3.  Open source and shareable. The front-end design, basic functions, information structure, and technical framework of the Tiananmen Massacre Memorial Museum will all be offered as open source once the basic functions have been stabilized, with the hope that our interactive approach can be more easily applied to other online museum projects and other digital human rights museums.

Crowdfunding Goals

Our goal is to raise 1.5 million Hong Kong dollars. Over the next year, we will complete the collection of files and digitization of data, resolve the technical issues involved in permanent preservation, and finally build the Tiananmen Massacre Memorial Museum. At the same time, we will initiate research and exhibitions on a number of key topics.

We hope that everyone who has, like us, been impacted and changed by the Chinese democratic movement in 1989 and by the Tiananmen Massacre, can contribute in some way to this meaningful project.
